George III Silver Inkstand with the Arms of Colby. Of shaped, rectangular form with a gadrooned, foliate, shell and C-scroll border. Engraved with a crest and an armorial. Features two pen rests, two cut glass ink bottles, wax compartment, taperstick holder and snuffer. Raised on four significantly large claw and ball feet.
The arms are those of Colby, of Great Torrington, Devon. The likely owner of this inkstand is the surgeon, Thomas Colby (1750 - 1824). A professional heraldry report accompanies this item.
Hallmarked and part hallmarked for London 1813/14 by Joseph Craddock & William Ker Reid. Hallmarks are to the underside of the base, bottle holders, bottle collars, bottle caps, wax compartment holder, taperstick holder and snuffer.
In excellent condition with no dents, creases, splits or repairs. The original cut glass bottles with minor chips and nibbles. One larger chip to one corner of one bottle.
