A very rare miniature antique Moorcroft Flamminian coffee cup and saucer by William Moorcroft.
The height of the cup (standing alone) is 49mm and the diameter 50mm
The height of the saucer is 19mm and the diameter 119mm
The cup has MOORCROFT and BURSLEM stamps on the base and additionally the impressions can just be felt. The saucer also carries the MOORCROFT and BURSLEM stamps and although very faint they can just be seen on the images provided. These back stamps suggest a date range 1914 to 1916
In further assessing the age of this cup and saucer one of the reference books recommended by Moorcroft advises Flamminian wares were registered in April 1905 and produced at least until 1915 hence adding credence to the date range assessment above.
Background information: The reference book shows examples of green and red Flamminian ware items dated 1906 to 1913. While the green an red examples carry the Liberty marks they also carry the foliate roundels as featured on this cup and saucer. Nb one of the items shown has lovely vertical colour variations with similarities to the cup and saucer offered for sale here.
This cup and saucer are clearly genuine antique items and are in excellent condition, in fact given their age it could be said they are in absolutely superb condition.
They do appear to be very rare and offer an opportunity to add perhaps almost unique pieces of antique Moorcroft pottery to a collection.
To be a custodian of such items is a responsibility but at the same time a responsibility which can give a collector a great deal of satisfaction.
With the two roundels on the cup and the three roundels on the saucer, around the variated red tone bodies they do present as interesting and attractive items. While beautiful Moorcroft items are still been produced, antique items have an appeal of their own and indeed many are now part of collections.
This Moorcroft antique Flamminian cup and saucer set is available by online order only. If planning to visit the Antiques Centre in York there are further examples of Moorcroft Pottery in Cabinet 138 which is located on the Lower Ground Floor.
