An antique Moorcroft Flamminian vase by William Moorcroft.
The height is 23.3cm (9.17 inch).
The base of the vase is fully signed with the impressed/painted William Moorcroft signature. There is a stamp which is very faint and difficult to read but believed to be the MADE FOR LIBERTY stamp, and also an impressed number 33 understood to be the shape number.
In assessing the age of this vase the base marks have been compared against those shown in one of the reference books recommended by Moorcroft and indicates a date range c1903 to 1913 but also further advises Flamminian wares were produced at least until 1915.
The reference book shows examples of green and red Flamminian ware vases dated 1906 to 1913 which carry the Liberty marking and foliate roundels of the type featured on the vase offered for sale here. Interestingly, the book advises Flamminian ware with their foliate roundels were registered in April 1905. The vase is clearly a genuine antique item.
Condition: This vase has been closely inspected and assessed as in excellent antique condition. In fact the only issues possibly worthy of separate mention are a small imperfection on the rim as can be seen from the images, which does not appear to result from external trauma, and what might be described as an over glazed 'crease' in the pottery on the base. There is the very fine all over crazing just visible as often present on antique Moorcroft pottery. Given its age the condition is quite remarkable with no other issues including chips, cracks or restoration noted and the vase displays very well.
With the three roundels around the red tone body it does present as an interesting and attractive item, and offers an opportunity to add what seems to be quite a rare piece of antique Moorcroft pottery to a collection.
While beautiful Moorcroft items are still been produced, antique items have an appeal of their own and indeed many are now part of collections. To be a custodian of such items is a responsibility but at the same time a responsibility which can give a collector a great deal of satisfaction.
This Moorcroft antique Flamminian vase is available by online order only however if visiting the Antique Centre in York please visit Cabinet 138 which is situated on the Lower Ground Floor. In this cabinet there are other examples of Moorcroft Pottery which a collector might like to view.
V&A Museum Interest:-

The webpage also advised the vase was on display, therefore could be viewed both online or by a visit to the Museum. The vase might still be viewable should anyone be interested in looking.
