A vintage Moorcroft plate in a leaves and fruit design under a deep Flambé glaze. A William Moorcroft design.
The diameter is 28cm (11.02inch) and the height 2.6cm (1.02inch).
There were a number of leaves and fruit designs produced under flambé glazes and the design featured on this plate has a match amongst a group of pottery items from 1928-1934 shown in one of the reference books recommended by Moorcroft, albeit on a vase rather than a plate, so while the plate is a little more recent the design may be approaching antique status.
Having a Flambé glaze gives this plate an added dimension and will very likely be of even further interest to a collector. Flambé firing took place at the Moorcroft Cobridge site until 1970 when the arrival of natural gas meant there would not be the right atmospheric conditions in the kiln, and the oven was later demolished in 1973.
Regarding the actual age of this plate there are MOORCROFT and MADE IN ENGLAND impressed backstamps which along with their positioning indicate a date range c1949 to 1986 however as Flambé firing ceased in 1970 a date assessment from c1949 to 1970 can be made, i.e. of early vintage age.
Condition:
Antique and vintage items may have small imperfections and/or idiosyncrasies due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and how an item has been stored but any significant issues will always be highlighted in the description.
This plate has been closely inspected with no chips, cracks or restoration noted. There is only the fine surface crazing normally associated with vintage Moorcroft pottery present. Quite often with these large vintage plates the base may not be completely level. The base level on this item has been checked to be within 1.5mm. Given its age the plate has been assessed as in excellent vintage condition.
There is a great deal of content in the design and the bright floral pattern under the Flambé glaze makes for a very attractive and highly collectable item. Its physical size means it may be suitable to display as a stand alone specimen item as well as been part of a collection.
