An antique Moorcroft squat vase in the Pomegranate design by William Moorcroft.
The diameter (across the widest section) is 157mm (6.18inch) the height 132mm (5.19inch) and the weight just over ¾ of a Kg (actual 0.764Kg). The vase presents as a very impressive item.
The Pomegranate design was introduced 1910 i.e. while William Moorcroft was still with the James Macintyre works but was continued by him when he set up his own factory at Cobridge on the outskirts of Burslem in 1913. Pomegranate became Moorcroft's most successful design and continued to be produced until the latter part of the 1930's with design updates along the way.
On the base of this vase there are MOORCROFT, BURSLEM, ENGLAND and shape identification backstamps (all impressed) which allows a date assessment of c1916-c1918 to be made. There is also William Moorcroft's painted signature in green.
This vase is from the very early days of Moorcroft pottery and a genuine antique item.
There is a great deal of content in the design with pomegranates, grapes and foliage all around the outer surface. Little wonder the pomegranate design was and remains so popular.
The vase has been closely inspected and is in excellent condition. The colours remain bright and on the dark blue ground make for a very attractive item which displays beautifully. In fact given its age and its antique status a description of superb might be more appropriate.
An opportunity for a collector to add a piece antique Moorcroft pottery, from the highly collectable pomegranate range, to a collection.
Of course given its size it may well be considered suitable to display as a stand alone item, perhaps in an entrance hall or reception room.
