Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Buller, 1st Baronet (1764 - 1824) Portrait Miniature on Ivory, After Michael Keeling and Henry Cook. The portrait dates to the first half of the 19th century.
Buller was a distinguished Royal Navy Officer and politician who served during the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary Wars, and the Napoleonic Wars. He joined the Royal navy in 1777 and in 1778 served at the Battle of Ushant on HMS Courageux. In 1782 he fought, as a Lieutenant, at the Battle of Trincomalee on HMS Sceptre. He was promoted to Commander and took charge of the captured French brig Chasseur, HMS Chaser, at the 1783 Battle of Cuddalore.
Buller fought at the Battle of Cape Finisterre in 1805, earning praise for his ship's performance. He received the surrender of the San Rafael and took possession of the Firme. As a reward for his efforts Buller was appointed a Colonel of Marines and in 1812 was promoted to Vice-Admiral.
