Surma Valley Light Horse, British Indian Army, Wood and Silver Plated Mug. 2nd Prize for Lime Cutting at Camp Silchar in 1899, Won by Corporal F H Carslaw (later Captain).
The Surma Valley Light Horse was formed as the Sylhet Volunteer Rifle Corps in 1880 and later became the Cachar and Sylhet Mounted Rifles in 1883. Designated Surma Valley Light Horse in 1886. The regiment was part of the Axillary Force (India) made up of European and Anglo-Indian officers and men, most of whom were tea planters. The headquarters was at Silchar.

Approximate dimensions are 15 cm height, 13.5 cm handle edge to rim edge length and 9.3 cm top rim diameter.
In good condition without dents or creases. Silver plate wear, as per the photos and one vertical split to the wood, about 7 cm in length (photos 5 and 7). This does not affect use, as the mug has a silver plated metal interior and the wood is a decorative cladding. A slight interior rattle when shaken. Raised on three ball feet.
