The figurine is in excellent condition.
There were three Mr Toadflax designs in the early range. The first was Mr Toadflax with his tail at the front and a cushion behind however this was soon withdrawn after introduction reputedly because senior personnel within Royal Doulton felt the design inappropriate. The second version, as offered for sale here, had the tail to the rear and no cushion but was itself replaced by a third version where the cushion was re introduced. There was also a further version ©2002 but this had a different number i.e. DBH 46.
The Royal Doulton Brambly Hedge range of ceramic products were inspired by the highly detailed illustrations produced by Jill Barklem for her series of books based on a community of mice who lived in Brambly Hedge.
These children's books, which were first published in 1980, became extremely popular selling millions of copies, and the subsequent Royal Doulton items widely collected.
