The French and Dutch text beneath the portrait plaque translates to : 'The Belgian people confident in their King'.
Leopold III (1901 - 1983) reigned from 1934 until his abdication in 1951. Following the German invasion of 1940 he surrendered Belgium to the nazis, who placed him under house arrest. During the war he and his family were moved to Germany and Austria, but were banned from returning to Belgium after the German surrender. He eventually returned to Belgium in 1950 and abdicated the following year, due to pressure from the government.
