A striking pair of vintage sterling silver clip-on earrings by celebrated Italian-Peruvian designer and silversmith Graziella Laffi (1923–2009).
Each circular earring features a wonderfully bold, raised geometric design inspired by the art and symbolism of pre-Columbian Peru, an important and distinctive influence throughout Laffi’s work. Her fascination with ancient Peruvian culture, particularly the Chavín and Moche civilisations, became central to the Modernist forms and motifs for which she is now collected.
Born in Florence, Laffi moved to Peru with her family in 1947 and subsequently became an important figure in 20th-century Peruvian silver design. Her work combined her Italian artistic training with traditional Peruvian metalworking and pre-Columbian influences.
The earrings have a highly polished finish and retain their original substantial clip fittings. They are stamped to the reverse G. LAFFI, PERU, 925, denoting sterling silver. Comparable documented Laffi pieces bearing G. Laffi / PERU / 925 marks have been dated to the 1960s–70s.
