Josiah Slater was a fashionable portrait painter. This portrait was executed in 1812 when Arthur Wellesley was 43 years old. In August of 1812 he was created Marquis Wellington, but was not made a Duke until 1814. The inscription 'Duke of Wellington' evidently added at a later date. A drawing, by Slater, of his children Arthur, 2nd Duke of Wellington and Lord Charles Wellesley, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1812 and is in the Wellington Collection at Strathfield Saye.
In 1812, the date of this portrait, Arthur Wellesley was in command of British forces in the Peninsular War, having forced the French out of Spain and Portugal.
Apparently inscribed verso: 'Arthur Wellesley Visconde de Vimeiro. Duque de Wellington'. Not removed from the frame to check this.
This Picture Appeared in the Sotheby's sale of March 2003.
