This rare and stunning antique Silver decanter / bottle label is in the form of a vine leaf, which is the traditional motif for wine related items and its connection to vineyards.
It has the word CLARET cut out of the silver vine leaf and has what appears to be the original small silver chain for hanging over the decanter or bottle.
Claret is another term for Bordeaux red wine, this term was used by the British in the 18th and 19th centuries
The label is beautifully handcrafted, and finely detailed, and was made by the renowned silversmith Joseph Willmore in 1828, who was active in Birmingham from the late 18th century to the mid 19th century; and was particularly known for crafting small high-quality silver items.
It is in excellent condition and has clear hallmarks for Birmingham 1828 and has the makers mark for Joseph Willmore.
The monarch William IV was on the throne at this time and his head is also on the hallmarks.
