A very large and fabulous quality solid silver tetradrachm coin of King Antiochus 1st.
This item which dates to circa 281 -261 BC is in wonderful allover condition.
It shows the head of King Antiochus 1st on the obverse side and on the reverse Apollo with arrow.
Following the death of Alexander the Great his empire was divided amongst his generals who established kingdoms in Egypt , Persia and the East coast of the Aegean, including Syria , Palestine Greece , Macedonia and Thrace.
The kingdom that Alexanders general Seleucus pieced together from the old Persian empire was enormous , but fragile .No sooner had his son Antiochus 1st inherited the kingship of his father than territories pulled away to form independent fiefdoms.
To add to his struggle he had to do battle with the Goth invaders which earned him the name of Sotar which is Greek for saviour.
Size 3.0 CM in Dia.
EX. Private Collection 1970s.
As with all of my antiquities and coins this item comes complete with a display box together with a certificate of authenticity.
