Admiral Sir John Ommanney Hopkins GCB Royal Navy (1834 - 1916), Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean Fleet 1896-99, Silver Plated Cigarette Case. Of curved, pocket form, with a gilded interior.
Hopkins joined the Royal Navy in 1848 and was promoted Captain in 1868. He commanded HMS Liverpool, Agincourt, Narcissus, Royal Adelaide and Temeraire. In 1880 he was appointed Captain of HMS Excellent, the Navy's gunnery training establishment at Portsmouth.
In 1891 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief, North American and West Indies Station and in 1897 Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet. He was appointed Rear Admiral in 1885, Vice Admiral in 1891 and Admiral in 1896.
