Description
A massively rare to find Romano- British terracotta poppy headed breaker and restored offering Dish.
These items which date to circa late 1st century AD- to mid 2nd century AD, are seldom seen outside of important collections.
The poppy headed breaker ( known as such , as when inverted it resembles a poppy head ) has a bulbous body with a wide flared rim. It is decorated with barbotine dot decoration, which is applied slip .( semi liquid clay.)in rectangular panels to the outter surface.
A small loss to the rim as can be seen, which considering its rarity is insignificant...
It is complimented by being accompanied by its restored offering dish , with concentric circle decoration to the centre ,again with a small loss to the rim.
Often associated with period settlement sites or accompanying grave goods.
Old Norfolk collection late 1960s.
Size Beaker 10.5 CM in Height.x Offering Dish 20.5 CM in Dia.
As with all of my antiquities and coins these items come complete with a certificate of authenticity.
