A large orange lustre vase by William Moorcroft.
With a height of 127mm (5.0 inch) a diameter (across the widest section of the body) of 154mm (6.0 inch) and a weight of 0.94 kg the vase presents as a very impressive item.
There is an impressed MOORCROFT backstamp and seemingly an impressed MADE IN ENGLAND backstamp which together indicate a date range 1926 to 1928 i.e. similar to backstamps found on 1918 to 1926 items but without the impressed shape identification number due to a change in the manufacturing process.
After William Moorcroft left the James Macintyre works he set up his own factory at Cobridge on the outskirts of Burslem in 1913 hence this vase is from the relatively early days of the new factory.
Condition:
Antique and vintage items may have imperfections due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and storage conditions. Small surface marks etc may be present but any significant issues will always be highlighted in the description. High quality images are provided as a matter of course and any questions will be answered as accurately as possible.
This vase has been closely inspected and assessed as in very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks.
There are some areas showing patterns of discolouration where where the glaze may not have taken perfectly and is a little unsmooth, particularly towards the top of the vase. There are some areas where the glaze may not be uniform and whiteness can be seen underneath as well as where the lustre appears to have faded over the years.
Overall however a very interesting vase and an opportunity for a collector to add an impressive piece of vintage (and soon to be antique, based on the 100 year old definition) Moorcroft pottery to a collection, or introduce a different aspect to the beautiful, highly decorative and multi colour designs seen on many later examples.
Of course the physical size of this vase means it may be well suited to display and admire as a stand alone item, perhaps in an entrance hall or reception room. It might even be thought of as having the appearance of an old museum piece and could look particularly interesting in the right setting.
This large orange lustre vase is available either by online order or by visiting the Antiques Centre in York i.e. in Cabinet 138 which is situated on the Lower Ground Floor. The cabinet also has other items of Moorcroft Pottery from early vintage pieces to more modern examples.
