Description:-
An antique Florian Ware vase designed by William Moorcroft while at the James Macintyre company.
The height is 170mm (6.69inch)
Age Assessment:-
The back stamps on the base of the vase include the Florian Ware mark in brown, a design registration mark, early incised Moorcroft initials and the pattern or shape number.
In assessing the age of this vase the base marks have been compared against those shown in one of the reference books recommended by Moorcroft and indicates a date range 1898 to c1905 (Florian Ware was introduced in 1898).
This vase is clearly a genuine antique item.
Condition:-
Antiques items may have small imperfections and/or idiosyncrasies due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and how an item has been stored but any significant issues will always be highlighted in the description.
This vase has been closely inspected, including by use of UV light, and assessed as in excellent antique condition. To perhaps be over pedantic there is what might best be described as a tiny smooth indent, which is under the glaze and hence from the manufacturing process, and a minute flake from the raised pattern (i.e. the slip trailing or tube lining), which can both be seen on the first image.
The condition is quite remarkable given that the vase is is well over a 100 years old and particularly as it has a great deal of decoration.
Comment:-
The physical size of the vase means it may just be considered suitable to display as a stand alone item as well as part of a collection.
While beautiful Moorcroft items are still been produced, antique items have an appeal of their own and indeed many are now part of collections. To be a custodian of such items is a responsibility but at the same time a responsibility which can give a collector a great deal of satisfaction.
