An antique green lustre squat vase by William Moorcroft.
The diameter is 129mm (5.07inch) and the height 98mm (3.85inch).
The impressed MOORCROFT and BURSLEM marks on the base date the vase to c1914-1916. The shape identification number on the base is also an impressed mark.
One of the reference books recommended by Moorcroft has an image of a Moorcroft catalogue page showing items with lustre glazes c1916 and also a further group of items with plain lustre glazes c1916, which fits in nicely with the date assessment above.
After William Moorcroft left the James Macintyre works he set up his own factory at Cobridge on the outskirts of Burslem in 1913. This vase therefore is from the very early days of Moorcroft pottery and a genuine antique.
The vase has been closely inspected and considered to be in excellent antique condition. There are no chips or cracks and very few small and rather insignificant scuffs/marks in the glaze. Furthermore the vase seems to be unaffected by the crazing often present on antique and vintage pottery. Overall the condition of the vase is quite remarkable given it is well over a 100 years old, and with the mottled green lustre finish presents as an impressive item.
An opportunity for a collector to add an attractive piece of antique Moorcroft pottery to a collection or introduce a different aspect to to the beautiful and colourful designs of later Moorcroft pieces.
The physical size of the vase means it may just be suitable to display as a stand alone item as well been part of a collection.
This antique green lustre vase is available either by online order or alternatively by visiting the Antiques Centre in York where it can be found, along with other items of Moorcroft pottery, in Cabinet 138 situated on the Lower Ground Floor.
