Sale Price Information: Please note this is an 'online' sale price only until labelling can be changed at the Centre. This is a large item taking up considerable cabinet space required for new stock, so a genuine opportunity to purchase at a heavily discounted price.
A large antique multi colour tone bowl/planter by William Moorcroft.
Dimensions:-
With a diameter of 198mm (7.79 inch) a height of 140mm (5.51 inch) and a weight of almost one and a half kilogram (actual weight 1.43Kg) the bowl/planter presents as an impressive item.
Date assessment:-
There are impressed MOORCROFT, BURSLEM, MADE IN ENGLAND and seemingly a shape identification number (also impressed) backstamps on the base which allows a date assessment of c1916-c1918.
After William Moorcroft left the James Macintyre works he set up his own factory at Cobridge on the outskirts of Burslem in 1913. This item is therefore from the very early days of Moorcroft pottery and a genuine antique.
Design:-
The bowl/planter has no specific floral or other design but rather an attractive pattern of colour variation, including pink, purple, cream and brown tones. This bowl/planter and the colourway appear to be quite rare for Moorcroft items.
Condition:-
Antique items may have imperfections due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and how it has been stored. Small surface marks etc may be present but any significant issues will always be highlighted in the description. High quality images are provided as a matter of course and any questions will be answered as accurately as possible.
The item has been closely inspected and assessed as in very good antique condition. On the rim three small, very tight and difficult to photograph hairline cracks are noted which appear to be natural and not caused by knocks etc as there is no damage to the surrounding areas. Internally the bowl/planter shows some signs of usage, possibly due to having housed a plant pot or other floral display.
Overall, when taking into account its antique status, it easily lives up to its very good condition assessment.
Comment:-
An opportunity for a collector to add a substantial piece of antique Moorcroft pottery to a collection, or introduce a different aspect to the beautiful, highly decorative and multi colour designs seen on many later pieces.
Additionally, the item may well be of interest to an interior designer to include in the right period setting for a client.
Given its size it is certainly large enough to used as a separate stand alone item, perhaps in an entrance hall or reception room, as well as been part of a collection.
This Moorcroft antique bowl/planter is available by online only or by visiting the Antiques Centre in York. If visiting the Centre please visit Cabinet 138 situated on the Lower Ground Floor to view a selection of Moorcroft Pottery from early vintage pieces to more modern examples.
