Mrs Newman Victorian 18ct Gold Compass Fob Bir 1895 Boxed
This piece is an 18ct yellow gold compass watch fob. The reverse of the fob is set with a carnelian. Working compass with a freely moving needle. The fob comes in an antique box, the printed silk lid reading: "Mrs. Newman, Goldsmith & Court Jeweller, 10 Savile Row. I believe it to be the original box. The compass could have been sold by Mrs Newman a couple of years after it was made (very plausible). Mrs. Newman, Goldsmith & Court Jeweller, 10 Savile Row was the business of Charlotte Newman (1836–1920), arguably the most important female goldsmith in Victorian Britain. "Mrs. Newman, Goldsmith and Court Jeweller, 10 Savile Row, London"—dates an item very closely to 1899–1910, when she occupied those prestigious premises The fob is hallmarked Birmingham 1895, the maker’s mark cannot be read. Dimensions 2.6 cm by 2.3 cm approx. Weight 11.3 grams. In excellent condition
