The 79th Carnatic Infantry were a British Indian Army Regiment. The regiment can trace its origins to the 20th Carnatic Battalion, formed from the 1st, 3rd, 8th and 16th Carnatic Battalions, as part of the Madras Army. The Madras Regiment was the oldest infantry regiment of the British Indian Army, originating in the mid 18th century as an East India Company regiment. During World War One the regiment was assigned to Mesopotamia for service against the Ottoman Turks. Initially the regiment performed lines of communication and garrison functions but it saw active service in Kurdistan after November 1918. After the First World War the regiment was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Madras Regiment.
