A superb antique Moorcroft 'Made for Liberty' Flamminian vase by William Moorcroft.
Height 99mm
While beautiful Moorcroft items are still been produced, antique items have an appeal of their own and indeed many are now part of collections.
The base of the vase is fully signed with the impressed/painted William Moorcroft signature, the MADE FOR LIBERTY stamp and an impressed number 10 understood to be the shape number. While the Liberty stamp is fairly faint under the glaze it is clearly present as can be seen from the images.
In assessing the age of this vase the base marks have been compared against those shown in one of the reference books recommended by Moorcroft and indicates a date range c1903 to 1913 but also further advises Flamminian wares were produced at least until 1915.
The reference book shows examples of green and red Flamminian ware vases dated 1906 to 1913 which carry the Liberty marking and the foliated roundels as featured on the vase offered for sale here. Interestingly, the book says Flamminian ware with their foliate roundels was first registered in April 1905. Nb one of the vases shown has lovely vertical colour variations with similarities to the vase offered here.
This vase is clearly a genuine antique item and in excellent condition, and in fact given its age it could be said to be in absolutely superb condition.
With the three roundels around the variated red tone body it does present as an interesting and attractive item, and offers an opportunity to add what seems to be quite a rare piece of antique Moorcroft pottery to a collection.
To be a custodian of such items is a responsibility but at the same time a responsibility which can give a collector a great deal of satisfaction.
This Moorcroft antique Flamminian vase is available online only however if visiting the Antiques Centre in York please visit Cabinet 138 situated on the Lower Ground Floor to view other examples of Moorcroft Pottery from early vintage to more modern pieces.
V&A Museum Interest:-
The V&A Museum website (25.09.24) featured a vase having a very similar Flamminian design (but different shape) in the collections section. The webpage also advised the vase was on display, therefore could be viewed both online or by a visit to the Museum. The vase might still be viewable should anyone be interested in looking.
