Description:-
A large Moorcroft vase in the Pomegranate design by William Moorcroft.
The height is 25cm (9.84 inch), the diameter (across the widest section of body) 14.5cm (5.70 inch) and the weight a substantial 1.46Kg
The Pomegranate design was introduced 1910 i.e. while William Moorcroft was still with the James Macintyre works but was continued by him when he set up his own factory at Cobridge on the outskirts of Burslem in 1913. Pomegranate became Moorcroft's most successful design.
Age Assessment:-
Moorcroft was awarded the royal warrant in 1928 and on the base of this vase is the impressed W Moorcroft signature with the impressed POTTER TO HM THE QUEEN mark to the lower right of the signature, plus the impressed MADE IN ENGLAND mark. There is also the painted WM initials. These back stamps allow the vase to be dated 1928 to 1949.
Condition Report:-
Vintage and antique items may have imperfections due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and how an item has been stored. Small surface marks, tiny fleabites, areas of matt glaze, small idiosyncrasies, fine crazing etc etc may be present but any significant issues will always be highlighted and high quality images are provided.
Damage: No chips or cracks noted.
Colours: Colours remain bright.
Glaze: There appears to be some glaze run from the manufacturing process resulting in areas of thicker glaze i.e. 'glaze waves' on the neck area.
Tube lining: Well defined, standing nicely proud of the surface.
Crazing: Some fine background crazing present.
Standing: Stands straight and true with no apparent tilt or malformation.
Base: Level to within approximately 1mm.
Backstamps: Well defined.
Overall a very impressive vase and a real 'show stopper' assessed as in very good vintage condition.
Any questions can be asked via the Antiques Centre and will be answered as accurately as possible.
Comment:-
With the five pomegranates around the vase there is a great deal of content in the design. Given its physical size it would likely display very well as a stand alone/specimen item, as well as been part of a collection.
While beautiful Moorcroft items are still been produced vintage and antique items have an appeal of their own and indeed many are now part of collections. To be a custodian of such items is a responsibility but at the same time a responsibility which can give a collector a great deal of satisfaction.
