A large vintage Moorcroft vase in the Rose design by Sally Tuffin.
With a height of 24.6cm (9.68inch) a width (across the widest section of the body) of 15.4cm (6.06inch) and a weight of 1.51Kg the vase is certainly an impressive item.
With some Moorcroft items it can be difficult to assess age as some production runs could be quite long, and it was not until 1990 that Moorcroft began using year cyphers to show when an item was actually made, however with this vase the date can be more accurately assessed.
The style of the impressed MOORCROFT and MADE IN ENGLAND marks on the base of this piece suggests it was made from 1986 but also as a there is no year cypher present the latest possible date should be 1989. The Rose design was introduced in 1987 (withdrawn in 1991).
From the information above an age assessment of 1987 to 1989 can be made hence the vase is clearly a genuine vintage piece.
Sally Tuffin was already a recognised designer when she joined Moorcroft in 1986 and took over the full responsibility for design following Walter Moorcroft's retirement in 1987. She was in fact only the third designer, after William and Walter Moorcroft, since the company began.
Vintage items may have small imperfections and/or idiosyncrasies due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and how an item has been stored but any significant issues will always be highlighted in the description. High quality images are provided and of course any questions will be answered as accurately as possible.
This vase has been closely inspected and assessed as in very good vintage condition with no chips, cracks or restoration identified and there is only minor crazing present i.e. of the type often found on vintage Moorcroft pottery. In fact the only reason for not offering an excellent assessment, and to perhaps be over pedantic, is that one side of the base is approximately 0.5mm from been perfectly level.
Sally Tuffin designs are now very collectable and this vase could make a nice addition to many a collection of vintage Moorcroft pottery.
The design presents an attractive combination of style and sophistication which along with its physical size means it may well be suitable to display as a stand alone specimen item, as an alternative to been part of a collection. Where ever it was displayed it would likely demand more than 'a second glance' from visitors.
