A vintage Moorcroft plate in the Leaf and Berry design by William Moorcroft, under a deep Flambé glaze.
The diameter is 23.7cm (9.33inch) and the height 2.0cm (0.78inch).
Design Identification: There were a number of leaves and fruit designs produced under flambé glazes and the Leaf and Berry design featured on this plate has a match on a teapot shown in one of the reference books recommended by Moorcroft and also on a vase in a group of pottery items from 1928-1934 shown in the same reference book.
Flambé Interest: Having a Flambé glaze gives this plate an added dimension and will very likely be of even further interest to a collector. Flambé firing took place at the Moorcroft Cobridge site until 1970 when the arrival of natural gas meant there would not be the right atmospheric conditions in the kiln, and the oven was later demolished in 1973.
Date: The plate has a number of impressed backstamps on the base including the Signature, POTTER TO HM THE QUEEN (to the bottom right hand side of the signature) and what will be the MADE IN ENGLAND backstamp.
These backstamps give a date for this bowl of c1928 to 1949
Condition: Antique and vintage items may have small imperfections and/or idiosyncrasies due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and how an item has been stored but any significant issues will always be highlighted in the description.
This plate has been closely inspected and assessed as in very good vintage condition. To perhaps be over pedantic the only issues possibly worthy of separate mention is a small shallow scratch on the outer edge (9 o'clock position on image 1) and a couple of tiny chips on the underside of the rim (10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions on image 5).
Given its age the plate easily lives up to its very good vintage condition assessment and it displays very well.
Other Detail: There is a great deal of content in the design and the bright floral pattern under the Flambé glaze makes for a very attractive and highly collectable item. Its physical size means it may be suitable to display as a stand alone specimen item as well as been part of a collection.
This plate is available only by online order however if visiting the Antiques Centre York a selection of other Moorcroft pottery can be found in Cabinet 138 which is located on the Lower Ground Floor.
For this item the dealer offers postage to UK addresses only.
