An antique lustre squat vase by William Moorcroft.
Size:-
Diameter 131mm (5.15inch). Height of 105mm (4.13inch).
Date assessment:-
There are impressed MOORCROFT, BURSLEM, ENGLAND, shape identification number (also impressed) backstamps on the base which allows a date assessment of c1916-c1918.
One of the reference books recommended by Moorcroft shows a range of plain lustre items c1916 which fits in nicely with the date assessment.
After William Moorcroft left the James Macintyre works he set up his own factory at Cobridge on the outskirts of Burslem in 1913. This vase is therefore from the very early days of Moorcroft pottery and a genuine antique.
Design:-
An attractive lustre design vase. Where the colours have worn/faded over the years this has left a lovely variated patina with shades of yellow and ivory tones showing through. There is the typical faint all over age related crazing present which only adds to the antique presentation.
Condition:-
Antique items may have imperfections due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and how it has been stored. Small surface marks etc may be present but any significant issues will always be highlighted in the description. High quality images are provided as a matter of course and any questions will be answered as accurately as possible.
The vase has been closely inspected and assessed as in excellent antique condition.
Comment:-
An opportunity for a collector to add a piece of antique Moorcroft pottery to a collection, or introduce a different aspect to the beautiful, highly decorative and multi colour designs seen on many later pieces.
Additionally, the vase would lend itself perfectly to be used by an interior designer looking for an antique piece to complement a period design.
Given its size the vase might just be large enough to be used as a separate stand alone item, perhaps in an entrance hall or reception room, as well as been part of a collection.
This Moorcroft antique squat vase can be ordered online or alternatively is available at the Antiques Centre in York i.e. in Cabinet 138 located on the Lower Ground Floor. The cabinet also holds a selection of Moorcroft Pottery from early vintage pieces to more modern examples.
