Second Anglo-Afghan War Salver with Ornate Grape & Leaf Openwork Border: 'Made from the Metal of a Gun Taken at Khelat-i-Ghilzai, Afghanistan 1880', 'Charles Edward Yate, Captain Bombay Staff Corps'.
Sir Charles Edward Yate, 1st Baronet (1949 - 1940). In 1867 he purchased an Ensigncy in the 49th Regiment of Foot. In 1871 he was promoted Lieutenant and transferred to the Bombay Staff Corps of the British Indian Army. In 1879 he was promoted Captain and commanded a detachment of the 29th Bombay Infantry (2nd Belooch Battalion) during the Second Afghan War. He later undertook political duties and was promoted Colonel in 1901.
Khelat-i-Ghilzai is an historic hill fort in southern Afghanistan, now the capital of Zabul Province. It was a strategically important location on the main road between Kandahar and Ghazni/Kabul.
