Description
A very good quality large roman redware oil lamp with Lion decoration to the discuss.
This item which dates to circa 4th century AD, is lovely allover condition.
It shows a striking lion to the upper section with a dash decorated border with ring and dote motif to the four quarters.
A faint makers mark to the base and the remains of a soot deposit to the spout.
Lions were often used to fight Christians and prisoners in the Colosseum to entertain the crowd. Likely the first time a european had seen a lion and possibly purchased as a momento of the day.
Overall a lovely lamp with much appeal..
Size 12.0 CM in Length.
Ex. Private collection.
As with all of my antiquities and coins this item comes complete with a certificate of authenticity.
