A large vintage Moorcroft plate/charger in the Finches design by Sally Tuffin.
A substantial piece with a diameter of 26.4cm (10.39inch) and a height of 3cm (1.18inch).
The Finches design on a blue ground was introduced in 1988. From 1990 Moorcroft started to introduce symbols i.e. year cyphers on the base of their pottery to show when an item was actually made. As there is no year cypher on this item the age can reasonably be assessed as 1988 to 1989 and hence a genuine vintage piece.
Sally Tuffin was already a recognised designer when she joined Moorcroft in 1986 and took over the full responsibility for design following Walter Moorcroft's retirement in 1987. She was in fact only the third designer, after William and Walter Moorcroft, since the company began.
The detail contained within this design is certainly worthy of special note. There are three finches against a background of berries, fruit (understood to be pomegranate) and leaves. The bright colours on a ground which graduates from dark to mid blue tones add to the overall effect where the eye is easily drawn into the scene. Sally Tuffin designs are now very collectable.
Condition: Vintage items may have small imperfections and/or idiosyncrasies due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and how an item has been stored but any significant issues will always be highlighted in the description.
This plate/charger has been closely inspected and assessed as in excellent vintage condition with the only issues possibly worthy of separate mention been a few tiny nibbles to the base rim and the base having been checked to within approximately 1 mm from true level, so perhaps appropriate to display on a doily or similar. Nb This item can of course be displayed vertally on a wall if preferred.
This piece appears free of the crazing which is often present on vintage Moorcroft pottery.
