Description
A very hard to find, Claudian Invasion period, bronze (AS) coin.
This item which dates to circa 41-54 AD, was used as emergency coinage.
When the Romans invaded England in 43 AD, under the emperor Claudius, it is understood that the had underestimated the amount of small coinage they would need to not only pay the roman military, but to set up an internal trading system.
The Roman Military therefore instigated a series of military travelling mints, which produced these coins as a stop gap until the normal volume of regular coinage came from Rome.
This coinage however circulated, and was accepted as legitimate for many years, as it was sanctioned by the emperor and produced by the military.
Of crude style and form with the emperor Claudius on the obverse side ,whilst the reverse shows Minerva with spear and shield.
Size 2.5 CM in Dia.
Kent collection 1970s.
As with all of my antiquities and coins this item comes complete with a display box, together with a certificate of authenticity.
