Description

Georgian, George III, Silver Armorial Bread Basket. Features an upper pierced section with slanted pales accented with four urns, beneath a beaded rim. The central base of the basket features an armorial and the swing handle with reeded decoration. Raised on a beaded collet foot.

The armorial relates to the marriage of Robert Shuttleworth (1784 - 1818) of Gawthorpe Hall, Lancashire and Janet Marjoribanks (1796 - 1855), daughter of Sir John Marjoribanks, Lord Provost of Edinburgh. A Heraldry report accompanies this item.

Hallmarked to the main basket for London 1784 by Thomas Chawner. Further part hallmarked to the underside of the handle.

In excellent order with no damage to any of the pierced detail. Free of dents and splits. Strengthening repairs to the underside of the centre of the handle. Traces of solder to the underside of the base, within the collet foot. Light surface wear commensurate with age.

Approximate weight is 683 grams or 21.96 troy ounces.

Approximate dimensions are 37 cm length, 26 cm width and 11 cm height with the handle lowered and 24 cm height raised.
