French Lead/Pewter Medal for the 1803 Declaration of War by Britain & Occupation of Hanover by the French Army.
The obverse depicts a leopard tearing up the Treaty of Amiens and reads 'The Treaty of Amiens broken on the part of England in May of the year 1803'.
The reverse depicts Victory riding a Saxon steed with a hand around its neck. The inscription reads 'Hanover Occupied by the French Army in June 1803' and 'Minted with silver from the mines of Hanover in the 4th year of Bonaparte'.
The 1802 Treaty of Amiens agreed peace between France and Britain. The peace lasted only thirteen months and was broken on May 18, 1803 after the return to power of William Pitt the Younger , who organized the Third Coalition and declared war on France. From 1803 Hanover was occupied by French and Prussian troops.
In very good condition with high wear to the outer rim and wear to the higher points of the relief detail.
