Georg was the son of esteemed porcelain painter Friedrich Cornicelius.
He started off his training in 1838 at the Drawing Academy of Hanau for 10 years, following on from which he attended the Academy of Antwerp and travelled France and Italy before returning back to his hometown of Hanau.
He quickly gathered a prestigious reputation for his skilled portraits and in 1872, he was appointed an honorary member of the Drawing Academy of Antwerp, where he was later made a titular professor of the Academy.
