‘A Drop For Pussy’
John Morgan (English, 1822-1885)
This beautiful painting has been part of a private collection for the past 40 years, but now has become available to adorn the walls for its new owner.
John Morgan, was born in North London in 1822 (Date taken from the Victoria and Albert Museum, however the census states that he was born in 1824) where he studied at the School of Design. Whilst living in Aylesbury in 1861, he found fame with his paintings ‘The Jury’ and ‘The Country Auction’. John Morgan at this time was struggling from a bad chest, and therefore moved to Guildford in the 1870s, where Morgan painted a number of works including ‘The Storm’.
To further his career, Morgan moved to Paris where he studied under the designers, Thomas Couture (1815-1879) and Paul Delaroche (1797-1856). His work was also influenced by other Victorian genre painters, most notably Thomas Webster and William Powell Frith.
He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Artists in 1852 and was elected to membership of Society of British Artists in 1875. From this, he exhibited many works including ‘Snowballing’.
Morgan moved to Hastings in 1882 where he remained until his death.
His son, Frederick Morgan was an equally popular artist whose work included many childhood scenes (See the one we have for sale). He was tutored by his father however also worked in the photographic studio of Samuel Payne.
