A French 1831 Pattern Infantry Short Sword known as a 'Gladius' because of its distinctive spatulate shaped blade similar to the ancient Roman Gladius. This sword was carried by French foot soldiers for close quarter hand to hand fighting. The cruciform hilt is of solid brass with circumferential grooves to help grip in combat, the cross guard terminates with finials of concentric circles. The blade bears the makers mark of 'THIEBAUT'. The sword is complete with its leather scabbard with brass chaperons and locket.
