A very rare British 1856 Pattern Pioneers' Short Sword. The broad saw back blade is straight and single edged with a double edged spear point. The blade has 54 teeth and was used as a saw in the field. The hilt is of solid brass with a ribbed grip riveted to the tang, the sword has a single brass knucklebow with a sword knot slit. The steel from which the blade is made has unusual striations of martensite which can be seen clearly on the photos. The scabbard is of black leather with brass locket c/w frog stud and brass chase. both the spine of the sword blade and the brass locket bear the makers stamp 'MOLE' for the famous maker 'Robert Mole' of Birmingham. The sword is in overall excellent condition.
