Beautiful, fine and tactile barrel shape tobacco jars with alternating staves of wood and original lead liner.
English, circa 1900
The tobacco jar with a less grainy pattern has the inscription "British made" stamped in the lead in the lid. They are both in exquisite condition both inside and out. The lead lining does show signs of age and use as it should be in an example of that age.
Tobacco jars have been used since the beginning of the 18th century to store tobacco for smoking-pipes. They are very collectable and they were made in all sorts of materials such as ceramic, porcelain, tin, pewter, glass and wood.
