This portrait was executed in 1812 when Arthur Wellesley was 43 years old. In August of 1812 he was created Marquis Wellington, but was not made a Duke until 1814. The inscription 'Duke of Wellington' evidently added at a later date. A drawing, by Slater, of his children Arthur, 2nd Duke of Wellington and Lord Charles Wellesley, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1812 and is in the Wellington Collection at Strathfield Saye.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn 1812, the date of this portrait, Arthur Wellesley was in command of British forces in the Peninsular War, having forced the French out of Spain and Portugal.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eApparently inscribed verso: 'Arthur Wellesley Visconde de Vimeiro.
