Description
A very rare Munich town guard morion helmet.
This piece which dates to circa 1580-1630 AD, Is in wonderful all over condition and rare survivor of the period.
It is made from two pieces of sheet steel with a seam along the high comb and peaked brim.
The design was taken from the much heavier Spanish transitional kettle hat with again the raised comb.
It is embossed on both sides with the fleur de lys ,which is the symbol of the virgin Mary and in the day the fleur de lys was painted white as a sign of purity, whilst the helmet was black.
This helmet was worn by a member of the town guard in the late 16th early 17th century as he guarded the Munich city walls.
The small plume holder has long since been lost in antiquity...Two brass decorative rivits still remaining..
Complete with display stand as shown.
