A superb antique Moorcroft 'Made for Liberty' Flamminian vase by William Moorcroft.
Height 18cm (7inch).
While beautiful Moorcroft items are still been produced, antique items have an appeal of their own and indeed many are now part of collections.
The base of the vase is fully signed with an impressed William Moorcroft signature and the 'des' mark confirming William Moorcroft as the designer. There is also the MADE FOR LIBERTY stamp and the Design Registration number.
In assessing the age of this vase the base marks have been compared against those shown in one of the reference books recommended by Moorcroft and indicates a date range c1903 to 1913 but also further advises Flamminian wares were produced at least until 1915.
The reference book shows examples of green Flamminian ware vases dated 1906 to 1913 which carry the Liberty marking and the foliated roundels as featured on the vase offered for sale here. Interestingly, the book says these roundels were first registered in April 1905. Nb one of the vases shown has lovely vertical colour variations similar to the vase offered here.
This vase is clearly a genuine antique item and in excellent condition, and in fact given its age it could be said to be in absolutely superb condition.
An opportunity for a collector to add what seems to be quite a rare piece of antique Moorcroft pottery to a collection. Of course the physical size of the vase means it may be suitable to display as a stand alone item, perhaps in an entrance hall or reception room, as well as part of a collection.
To be a custodian of such items is a responsibility but at the same time a responsibility which can give a collector a great deal of satisfaction.
