A very rare and seldom seen viking ship builders iron adze.
This item which dates to circa 9th-10th century AD, is in fabulous allover condition.
The adze was used in a similar way to the axe and mounted on a wooden shaft but positioned at right angles .
Predominantly used for trimming large planks of wood used on the side of the ships ,to make the surface alĺ one thickness, and used in fashioning the large dragon heads at the front of the long boats. The clinkerbuild viking boats required great accuracy in the preparation of the timbers as these craft were light and fast with a shallow draft ,which contributes to the viking warrior warlike reputation.
Ex. North Yorkshire collection from the early 1970s.
As with all of my antiquities and coins this item comes complete with a certificate of authenticity.
