A Moorcroft yellow lustre vase by William Moorcroft.
The height is 153mm (6.02 inch).
There is lovely patina with yellow, green and even bronze tones showing through as the catches the light.
The impressed MOORCROFT and MADE IN ENGLAND stamps on the base along with the impressed shape identification number allows the vase to be dated c1918 to 1926. Nb Referral to reference book advises similar stamps are found from 1926 to 1928 but without an impressed shape identification number due to a change in the manufacturing process.
After William Moorcroft left the James Macintyre works he set up his own factory at Cobridge on the outskirts of Burslem in 1913 hence this vase is from the early days of the new factory.
Condition: Antique and vintage items may have imperfections due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and how it has been stored. Small surface marks etc may be present but any significant issues will always be highlighted in the description. High quality images are provided as a matter of course and any questions will be answered as accurately as possible.
This vase has been closely inspected and assessed as in excellent vintage condition. There are only a few tiny and rather insignificant surface marks and no chips or cracks. There is very fine crazing present over the the surface area which is often present on items of this age and really adds to its character. The lustre glaze makes the vase difficult to photograph without using techniques that would null the shine and in the dealer's opinion the vase looks far more attractive in 'real life' than represented in the images.
An opportunity for a collector to add a piece of vintage and possibly antique (based on the 100 year old definition) Moorcroft pottery to a collection, or introduce a different aspect to the beautiful, highly decorative and multi colour designs seen on many later pieces. Given its size it may just be big enough to display as a separate stand alone item, perhaps in an entrance hall or reception room.
This yellow lustre vase is currently available by online order or by visiting the Antiques Centre in Central York. If visiting the Antiques Centre please visit Cabinet 138 situated on the Lower Ground Floor to view other items of Moorcroft Pottery from early vintage pieces to more modern examples.
