A 'gold filled' costume jewellery necklace signed 'van dell' and marked 1/20 12K GF.
Van Dell jewellery started in the USA in 1939 and often used 'gold filled' material to produce items resembling fine jewellery. Van Dell items are quite collectable but can be somewhat rarer due to the lower numbers that were made and hence can command higher prices.
'Gold Filled' refers to a process where a layer of gold has been fused to each side of a base metal. To be described as 'gold filled' an item has to be one twentieth gold by weight and the gold thickness is normally much thicker than with gold plating. The process is similar to 'rolled gold' however 'rolled gold' can be less than one twentieth of gold by weight.
The necklace is in excellent condition. A lovely item from a recognised collectible brand.
This necklace is available online only however if visiting the Centre please visit Cabinet 138 situated on the Lower Ground Floor to view a selection of costume jewellery, collectibles, items of silverware and Moorcroft Pottery from early vintage pieces to more modern examples.
