THE FIRST "SPACE WATCH"
1954 Soviet Russian Kirova Shturmanskie (Navigator) "Gagarin" pilot's wristwatch. 15 jewel hand wind movement, manufactured at the First Moscow Watch Factory.
Known as the "Gagarin" watch because Yuri Gagarin, together with his fellow pilots, was presented with one of these watches on graduating from the Orenberg flight school in 1957. These watches were produced specially for Soviet Russian Air Force officers by order of the Ministry of Defence of the USSR and not for mass sale. Gagarin wore such a watch when he became the first man in space on April 12th 1961.
The movement of this watch is marked `3-54` meaning it was manufactured in the third quarter of 1954 and would therefore have been presented to one of Gagarin's fellow contemporary graduates.
This is an original military pilot officer watch and not a recent re-issue which do not have the same movement and cost between £250 and £300!
