Vintage Moorcroft vase in the Orchid pattern.

The orchid pattern was originally developed by William Moorcroft c1937 and further developed by Walter Moorcroft in the 1940's and 1950's.

The baluster shape with a floral design of different colours on a dark blue ground makes for a highly attractive and tactile item.

The vase is in excellent condition with only very minor glaze crazing to the base and virtually none on the body apart from a few areas of minute crazing seen only after very close inspection.

Many pieces of vintage and antique Moorcroft pottery can show significant glaze crazing, possibly due to water ingress (with vases) or storing in areas subject to temperature variation, where the glaze and base material expand and contract at different rates. This vase however allows a serious collector of vintage Moorcroft pottery to acquire an item, which has not been significantly affected, and maintain it in an excellent condition.

Regarding the age of the vase it can be difficult to assess with absolute certainty as some production runs could be quite long, and it was not until 1990 that Moorcroft began using year cyphers to show when an item was actually made.

As a there is no year cypher on the vase the latest possible date of manufacture would be 1989 however there are a number of ways to narrow this down, as indicated below:-

The large impressed MOORCROFT mark on the base along with the MADE IN ENGLAND mark in upper case suggests a date range c1950 to 1986.

Moorcroft used the W Moorcroft Potters to the Late Queen Mary paper label from 1953 to 1978 and as this label does not appear on the vase it might suggest a date before 1953 or after 1978 although it is quite possible a paper label might have been removed.

Referral to reference book states the orchid design was last used in 1972.

From the condition of the vase and the detail above the vase might reasonably be assessed as been made c1960's however which ever date range assessment is used the vase is clearly of a genuine vintage age.

A very lovely vase which should prove a worthy addition to many a collection of Moorcroft pottery.
