A vintage Moorcroft vase in the Hibiscus pattern.
The hibiscus pattern was originally designed by Walter Moorcroft in 1949 and then redeveloped around 1960.
Some production runs could be quite long, particularly with popular designs such as Hibiscus and it can be difficult to accurately date an item. As Moorcroft began using year cyphers in 1990 to show when an item was actually made, and as there is no year cypher on this vase it can reasonably be assessed as made prior to 1990. In fact the MOORCROFT mark on the base suggests a date prior to 1986. Which ever assessment is used it indicates a genuine vintage item.
The vase has no chips, cracks or glaze crazing and is in excellent overall condition.
Many pieces of vintage and antique Moorcroft pottery can show significant glaze crazing, possibly due to water ingress (with vases) or storing in areas subject to temperature variation, where the glaze and base material expand and contract at different rates. This vase however has not been affected and hence allows a collector to acquire a vintage piece and maintain it in an excellent state by appropriate use and storage.
This vase is available online only however if visiting the Antiques Centre please visit Cabinet 138 situated on the Lower Ground Floor to view other items of Moorcroft Pottery, from early vintage pieces to more modern examples, plus a selection of collectibles and items of silverware.
