This badge was given by the War-Bereaved Association (Zoku-kai) to the next of kin of a soldier who died on a battlefield, of if they died (within 3 years) from sickness or injury as a direct result of being a soldier. The family also received a pension or one-off payment and possibly other benefits. The value depended on the soldier's rank.
The obverse of the badge features a cherry blossom with a pebbled background on a plain cherry blossom shape. The reverse is inscribed "War-Bereaved badge". The case is carved from Paulonia wood.
The badge was established in 1931 by the War-Bereaved Association.
The badge emblem measures 2.5 cm (1") in diameter. The box measures 6.5 cm (2.5") by 12 cm (4.75") by 2 cm (.75"). All measurements are approximate.
