In The 18th And 19th Centuries Before the Days Of The Municipal Fire Brigades,You had to Arrange your own Fire Insurance. The Insurance Companies Issued Their Members With a Fire Mark for the Front of Their House So That In The Event Of A Fire, their Brigade Would Be Able To Recognise A Subscriber, and So Would Attend The Fire. If You Didn't Have This Cover You Were Left To Your Own Devices. The Larger Houses Often Had Their Own Fire Pump and Raised Their Own Fire Brigade From Their Domestic Staff.
