A scarce British Royal Navy Reserve Officers Dress Sword of pattern 1926/37, retailed by GIEVE'S of Portsmouth, London & Devonport. The blade has a circular PROVED brass disc insert at forte, with a 'P' in the centre and the retailers name on the reverse. Gieve's were an army and navy outfitter and sword cutler between 1900 and 1969 and the swords they retailed were mainly manufactured by the Wilkinson Sword Company.
The hilt is of gilt brass retaining most of the original gilding. the gothic guard has the Royal Navy fouled anchor cartouche with Kings crown and the initials RNR. A section of the rear of the guard down-turns to lock the sword into the scabbard. The pommel is the lions head with long mane backstrap. The grip is covered with white shark skin and bound with triple gilt wires. The sword os complete with its original gilt and blue bullion dress knot.
The fullered blade is engraved on both sides for 2/3 of its length with Kings crown fouled anchor and royal monogram on one side and royal monogram and RNR on the reverse.
The scabbard is of black leather with three gilt brass mounts and two suspension rings.
