A fabulously rare ,english medieval carved stone grotesque water spout.
This item which dates to circa 14th-15th century AD, is in excellent condition.
It has an expressive face carved on a bowl helmet shape in the round ,and was carved from Yorkshire gritstone .
This type of medieval sculpture is called a smiling grotesque.
It has a drainage hole underneath to direct the water flow away from the church building.
A very interesting note is that the nose has either worn away or been taken off ..This was an old medieval practice to spite or take away a curse.
A fabulous item with a black patination to the stone and some old stress lines as shown ..
All completely solid as one would expect after six hundred years and with wonderful detail.
Found in Yorkshire in the 1970s.
Ex. Old private collection.
As with all of my antiquities and coins this item comes complete with a certificate of authenticit
